Founded in 2006 by entrepreneur Jamal Edwards, online music channel SBTV pioneered a platform for emerging grime and rap artists. Using a camcorder gifted at Christmas, Edwards began filming his friends, creating content that would ultimately reshape the music industry.
The platform played a crucial role in launching the careers of many notable acts such as Dave, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, and Skepta. By the age of 23, Edwards had achieved millionaire status and was recognized for his philanthropic efforts, receiving an MBE for his services to music in 2014.
Edwards passed away in 2022 at the age of 31 due to cardiac arrhythmia. His sister, Tanisha, now serves as CEO of SBTV, committed to preserving her brother's legacy. She emphasizes the importance of curated platforms like SBTV in an era dominated by algorithms, ensuring emerging talent still has a chance to break through.
To commemorate its 20th anniversary, SBTV is reviving some of its popular freestyle formats to discover a new generation of rappers. Additionally, a special one-off concert will be held at London's O2 arena next week. This event will feature artists who were initially platformed by SBTV, including Tinie Tempah and Tinchy Stryder, and will raise funds for the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust.
