Satyajit Ray's iconic films are captivating Japanese audiences, with seven of his restored classics recently receiving their inaugural theatrical release across the nation. These cinematic gems, including 'Jalsaghar,' 'Mahanagar,' and 'Charulata,' spanned two decades of Ray's illustrious career and were shown from July 25 onwards.
The retrospective, which began at Le Cinema Bunkamura in Tokyo, was extended by an additional week due to immense popularity, demonstrating a significant demand for Ray's work. Screenings were held in major cities like Hiroshima, Osaka, and Kyoto, reaching an estimated 15-20 cinemas nationwide.
This revival is partly attributed to the long-standing admiration for Ray in Japan, notably championed by Kashiko Kawakita, wife of film pioneer Nagamasa Kawakita. Kawakita facilitated a crucial meeting between Ray and Akira Kurosawa in 1966 and was instrumental in distributing Ray's films in Japan for decades.
The screenings were enhanced by engaging discussions. Film researchers and Rabindrasangeet performers led sessions, reflecting on the profound impact of Ray's cinema and its layered artistry. The films are also slated for a Blu-ray release in March, further cementing Ray's legacy in Japan.
