Filmmaker Sandip Ray noted the long-standing connection between Japanese and Indian cinema, tracing it back to the early 1960s and the influence of Kashiko Kawakita, a devoted admirer who facilitated a landmark meeting between Satyajit Ray and Akira Kurosawa in 1966. Ray, in turn, held Japanese cinema in high esteem, particularly Kurosawa's "Rashomon."
Supporting the screenings were explanatory seminars led by Japanese connoisseurs. These events enriched the audience's understanding of Ray's cinematic vision.
