The National School of Drama in Delhi recently hosted a vibrant showcase of India's cultural heritage with the presentation of Srimanta Sankaradeva's classical dance drama Parijat Haran. This event, part of the Delhi Kala Festival 2026, drew an audience of over 400 people.
Parijat Haran, directed by Sumanya Kashyap and Dr. Sukanya Baruah, explored themes of love, jealousy, and devotion through the portrayal of Lord Krishna's exploits. The performance adeptly blended music, dance, drama, and storytelling to convey the contrasting emotions of Rukmini and Satyabhama.
The festival, organized by Nishreyas and Vagambhrini in association with Delhi Tourism, features seven distinct classical dance forms: Sattriya, Bharatnatyam, Kathakali, Odissi, Kathak, Chhau, and Manipuri. Union Cabinet Minister Sarbananda Sonowal lauded the festival for going beyond mere performance and called for more initiatives to preserve India's cultural legacy.
Sattriya, originating from Assam's Vaishnavite movement nearly five centuries ago, is a significant tradition that synthesizes artistic expression, devotion, philosophy, and community practice. The National School of Drama expressed pride in hosting this event, which unites various cultural traditions on a common platform.
