Satish Gujral: A Life in Art Remembered

The National Gallery of Modern Art is hosting a centenary exhibition to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of legendary artist Satish Gujral. This exhibition, a collaboration with the Gujral Foundation, spans Gujral's seven-decade career, offering a deep dive into his exploration of material, form, memory, and space. Over 150 of his works, including paintings, sculptures, sketches, and murals, are on display, providing a comprehensive view of his artistic evolution.

The exhibition is more than a retrospective; it's a testament to Gujral's profound connection to life experiences. His art vividly captures historical moments like the Partition and the birth of a new nation, alongside the subtleties of everyday existence. Curator Kishore Singh highlighted how Gujral's artistic language evolved, shifting from empathetic to playful, poignant to joyful, all stemming from a place of deep introspection.

Satish Gujral's journey, from Jhelum to international locales and back, is mirrored in his diverse artistic output. The exhibition also sheds light on the symbiotic relationship he shared with his wife, Kiran, whose presence influenced the latter half of his life and artistic expression. This collection celebrates Gujral not just as an artist, but as a sculptor, muralist, and architect, honoring his entire life's contribution to Indian modern art.
