A brief, viral snippet from Satinder Sartaaj's song "Jaiye Sajana" for the film "Dhurandhar: The Revenge" has recently achieved nationwide recognition. The song's haunting lines have resonated deeply with the public, propelling Sartaaj to broader fame.
During a recent performance, Sartaaj shared an unexpected connection with filmmaker Aditya Dhar, extending beyond their collaboration on the song. He disclosed that Yami Gautam's father, Mukesh Gautam, was instrumental in shaping his distinctive attire, a fact that pleased Dhar.
This style, often featuring ethnic kurtas and turbans with hair cascading over the shoulders, originated in 2003. At that time, Sartaaj was pursuing a doctorate in Sufism and was approached by Mukesh Gautam, then head of a Chandigarh television channel, for a docuseries on Baba Waris Shah.
Mukesh Gautam needed someone to narrate and sing live for the series. Sartaaj, then a student at Panjab University, agreed to participate. For the shoot, he spontaneously used a black studio curtain to create a turban, inspired by a photograph of Sufi poet Waris Shah, a look that impressed Gautam and became his signature style.
Mukesh Gautam is a notable figure in the Punjabi film and television industry, having received a National Award in 2024 for "Baghi Di Dhee." Satinder Sartaaj, a respected artist for over 15 years, holds a PhD in Sufism and is known for integrating Sufi philosophy into his music. He is currently on a global concert tour.
