Sarasota's Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) celebrated Juneteenth with its expanded fourth annual Arts Festival on June 19 and 20, 2026. The event’s growth in popularity necessitated a two-day format to commemorate this significant date.
Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the 1865 enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, by General Gordon Granger. This historic moment ensured that the remaining enslaved people in the USA learned of their freedom. The national recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday was achieved in 2021 following advocacy.
Under the direction of Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs, WBTT’s festival was a lively showcase of African American culture. Attendees enjoyed a rich display of art, engaging performances, food, and educational workshops, celebrating heritage and freedom.
