Saoirse Ronan's 'Paper Plane' Soars at Venice Film Festival

Actress Saoirse Ronan is set to make her directorial debut with the short film "Paper Plane" at the upcoming Venice Film Festival. The 15-minute Irish production, which Ronan also penned, will compete for the Orizzonti Award for best short film. This marks a significant milestone for the 32-year-old, who has received four Academy Award nominations throughout her acting career.

Ronan stated her thrill in presenting a film made in Italy, a country that holds deep personal meaning. She revealed that the inspiration for "Paper Plane," which explores a mother-daughter relationship, stems from elements of her own childhood experiences. The narrative centers on a young girl who challenges her mother by leaving home.

The project has been in development for approximately two years, with principal photography concluding in late May and subsequent editing phases. Ronan described the challenges of directing, including securing shooting permits and the complexities of working with a dog and child on film. She also noted the difficulty of conveying a narrative effectively within the concise 15-minute runtime of a short film.

Having returned to filmmaking after a break, Ronan expressed a renewed curiosity and a "new lease on life" that directing has instilled in her, impacting her perspective as an actor. She plans to pursue directing feature-length films, embracing a sense of "blind faith" to embark on this new endeavor.
