Santa Monica Pier Sign Begins Year-Long Restoration
24 Sep
Summary
- The iconic sign will be removed for restoration.
- Refurbishment will take place in Las Vegas.
- The sign is expected back by late 2027.

The Santa Monica Pier's iconic arched white-and-blue sign, a landmark since 1941, is beginning an extensive restoration that will last over a year. The City of Santa Monica is removing the sign for preservation.
Crews will carefully dismantle the sign using cranes and temporary supports. Its components will be sent to Las Vegas for refurbishment by YESCO, a company renowned for its work on historic neon displays, including the 'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas' sign. The work will involve restoring neon tubing, rust removal, repainting, and structural repairs.
The sign is listed in the California Register of Historical Resources. Its removal and restoration are part of a larger city effort to improve the Pier Bridge. This bridge, built in 1941, will undergo structural and seismic upgrades, including a new sidewalk, and is scheduled to reopen in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games. The refurbished pier sign is promised to return by late 2027.
