A poignant sand sculpture honoring Medal of Honor recipient Jason L. Dunham is planned for Belmont's America 250 commemoration. World-renowned sand sculptor Eric Jones, an Allegany County native, will craft this tribute. The event is scheduled for July 4th in Belmont's Park Circle. Permission to honor Corporal Dunham's legacy was respectfully obtained from his parents by the Belmont 250th Celebration Committee.
The committee has launched a $3,000 fundraising campaign to finance the sculpture. Community members, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to contribute through sponsorships and donations. Donors will be recognized with a sign displayed near the sculpture during the celebration. Shannon Harding, Chair of the committee, highlighted the project's representation of patriotism and sacrifice.
Corporal Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in the Iraq War, saving fellow Marines. His story was also the subject of the 2025 documentary "The Gift," which premiered on major streaming platforms, detailing his courage and lasting impact.
