Samir Soni: 25 Years Waiting for the Lead Role

Actor Samir Soni has reached a turning point in his more than two-decade-long film career. He has expressed a strong desire to move beyond supporting roles, stating he would rather quit acting than continue playing characters like a "good brother" or "father." Soni is now determined to play a lead role, a goal he has pursued for over 25 years.

His early career faced setbacks, including significant portions of his role being cut from his debut film, "China Gate." Soni notes that supporting characters are often the first to be removed during editing. He recalls advice from the late Om Puri, who described supporting actors' roles as bolstering the main characters, a reality Soni finds increasingly frustrating.

Despite sharing screen space with industry veterans and holding his own, Soni feels this has not led to more substantial opportunities. He questions why his ability to perform alongside major actors hasn't resulted in deeper character roles. He uses a cricket analogy, comparing himself to a 12th man who is always on the team but never gets to play.

Samir Soni remains grateful for the experiences he has had, acknowledging the opportunity to play significant roles alongside actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini. However, he is now actively seeking parts with more emotional complexity and depth, believing that even well-written supporting roles can leave a lasting impression.
