From Guru to Grifter: The Twisted Path of 'Salvation'

Writer-director Tom Nicoll's debut film, "Salvation," is set to premiere at TIFF, offering a darkly comic and psychological thriller. The narrative follows Danny Carlton, an aspiring life coach who, after a transformative retreat, becomes convinced he has discovered the key to self-optimization. He aims to build a business around this, but faces the challenge of few customers and growing debt.

"Salvation" is largely set in Greenock, a post-industrial Scottish town. The film explores the economic pressures that drive Danny to manipulate his clients, particularly a depressed young man named Scott. Assembled through self-financing and crowdfunding, with late-stage support from Screen Scotland, "Salvation" shot in Greenock and Glasgow. Director Nicoll found inspiration in American independent filmmakers like Sean Baker and Kelly Reichardt. The title "Salvation" reflects the self-help concept of being saved from pain, a notion Nicoll questions.

The film avoids easy answers, leaving the audience to ponder Danny's capacity for reflection. "Salvation" has garnered significant buzz, with international sales and recognition as a Screen International Rising Star Scotland 2026. Nicoll aims to scale up his filmmaking ambitions beyond the independent level.
