The first-ever Salar International Film Festival (SalarFF) is set to take place from May 28-31, uniquely situated on Bolivia's expansive salt flats. This remarkable location, known for its mirror-like surface reflecting the sky, will serve as the backdrop for the cinematic event themed "Mirror of the Soul."
The festival's opening night will feature Dolores Fonzi's "Belén," a film that has already secured a Goya for Ibero-American Film and was shortlisted for an International Feature Film Oscar. Closing the festival will be Martín Boulocq's documentary "Criminal Body" ("Cuerpo Criminal"), making its Bolivian debut.
SalarFF will screen six recent international feature films that have earned accolades at prestigious festivals like Sundance and Berlin. Attendees can also look forward to masterclasses led by distinguished guests, including Variety's "10 Cinematographers to Watch" in 2024, Oren Soffer, and Bolivian-American filmmaker Elle León Nostas. A short film competition for accredited attendees will challenge them to create films on location within four days, with the winning entry to be projected on the salt desert.
Discussions and sessions in collaboration with local Indigenous communities will also be a core part of the program. The festival's primary goal, as stated by director Bellott, is to showcase Bolivian cinema, its industry, locations, and culture to a global audience, fostering a sense of connection and shared perspective.
