Sagrada Familia Reaches New Height
20 Feb
Summary
- Central tower now stands 172.5 meters high.
- Construction began in 1882 and continues.
- Entrance fees largely fund ongoing construction.

The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona achieved a significant milestone on Friday, February 20, 2026, as its central tower, the "Tower of Jesus Christ," reached its maximum height. This towering structure now stands 172.5 meters (566 feet) above the city, making the basilica even closer to its long-anticipated completion.
Construction on Antoni Gaudí's ambitious design began in 1882, with the architect himself not expecting its completion within his lifetime. The basilica became the world's tallest church in October of the previous year. Its ongoing construction is significantly supported by the millions of tourists who visit annually, with entrance fees playing a crucial role in funding the project.
Preparations are underway for celebrations marking the centenary of Gaudí's death in June. As part of this, the scaffolding around the central tower is expected to be removed by June, coinciding with the inauguration of the "Tower of Jesus Christ." The cross atop the tower features four arms, as Gaudí originally planned, designed to be recognizable from any direction.
