25 Feb
Summary
- Artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino were reinstated after controversy.
- Two major works will be presented at the Venice Biennale in May.
- The artworks explore spirituality, migration, and shared humanity.

Australia's representation at the Venice Biennale in May will be a "nurturing experience" designed to foster unity, following a highly divisive period concerning the nation's participation. Artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino, who faced controversy and reinstatement by their government, will present two major works.
Sabsabi, drawing from his Sufi Muslim practice, will explore spirituality, migration, and shared humanity. One work, 'conference of one's self,' in the Australia Pavilion, invites contemplation of collective humanity. A second, crowdfunded work will feature in the Biennale's main exhibition, a first for an Australian artist.
The Biennale presentation comes after Creative Australia initially revoked Sabsabi's commission, citing concerns about "divisive debate." This decision led to backlash but was later reversed following an independent review that acknowledged "missteps" and apologized for the "hurt and pain" caused. The artistic intent for the Biennale remains unchanged, with the works evolving naturally from Sabsabi's 35-year practice informed by his migrant experience and Sufi beliefs.
