Ryan Murphy Adapts Personal '80s Horror

Ryan Murphy has adapted Bret Easton Ellis' 2023 novel, The Shards, for FX, transforming it into a compelling coming-of-age horror series set in early 1980s Los Angeles. The story follows a group of affluent teenagers who find themselves targeted by a mysterious serial killer.

Murphy, who experienced his own formative years in 1981, felt a profound personal connection to the novel's themes of identity, hidden lives, and the intersection of adolescence with lurking danger. The adaptation aims to capture the specific cultural references and emotional landscapes of the era.

The series stars Igby Rigney as the protagonist based on Ellis, alongside Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere. Murphy emphasized his passion for the project, convincing Ellis to grant him the adaptation rights. He envisioned the story as a potential multi-season series from the outset.

Murphy co-wrote the initial episodes with Ellis, who adopted a hands-off approach thereafter. The adaptation navigates the novel's eroticism with a focus on longing and intimacy, aiming for tasteful representation. Murphy also revealed that the subtext of the AIDS epidemic and its intertwining with adolescent experiences of intimacy and death significantly influenced the narrative's tone.

"The Shards" premiered with its first two episodes on Wednesday night, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly through September 9. The production involved extensive casting, with around 500 actors considered for the roles. Murphy highlighted the challenge and thrill of recreating the authentic 1981 Los Angeles atmosphere, including iconic locations.
