After years of avoiding ongoing franchises, three-time Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling has signed on for his first major franchise role in Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter. The movie is scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027.
Gosling revealed that his decision to join the project stemmed from director Shawn Levy's compelling vision and the quality of the script. He stated that such roles "never felt right" before, but Starfighter presented a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" that was worth the wait. This standalone film is set five years after "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker" and features an original story with new characters.
The cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams, among others. Gosling expressed high praise for the film's narrative, calling it "such a great story with great and original characters," and noted Levy as the "perfect filmmaker" for this particular tale. Despite having played memorable characters like Ken in "Barbie" and in "Blade Runner (2049)", Gosling has not previously reprised a role, making his entry into the Star Wars universe a significant career move.
