Kerala-based artist Roy K John is presenting a new body of work in New Delhi, featuring paintings and three-dimensional wooden sculptures that explore memory, perception, and transformation through botanical forms. John's artistic practice is deeply rooted in the Kerala tradition of Kani, reinterpreting the concept of an auspicious first sight within contemporary landscapes. His pieces give vegetation an almost architectural quality, with elements like tree trunks resembling columns and foliage suggesting structural screens, subtly revealing fragments of domestic life.
Influenced by his training in traditional Kerala mural painting, John integrates classical iconography and techniques into his modern explorations of Kerala's natural environment. The exhibition also showcases his recent wooden leaf sculptures, which extend his engagement with botanical motifs beyond the canvas, highlighting both the abundance and fragility of natural ecosystems.
