When The Roots emerged in the mid-90s, they were uniquely known for their live instrumentation, distinguishing them in the hip-hop landscape. Now, the group has undergone a notable evolution with their album 'Phrenology'. This release features a bolder, more aggressive sonic palette, employing the studio as an instrument and incorporating electro flourishes.
'Phrenology' explores a range of subjects, from the challenging personal journey of a former band member dealing with addiction on the ten-minute track "Water," to punk-inspired aggression on "!!!!!!". The album also revisits their old-school hip-hop roots on "Thought @ Work" and features spoken word contributions. Despite experimental moments, the album integrates various facets of The Roots' established sound.
