Melbourne Museum has opened its doors to ROME: Empire, Power, People, an exhibition presenting over 180 ancient artifacts from Rome's imperial period. Running until October 25, this Melbourne-exclusive event showcases items dating from the first century BC to the third century AD, many of which have never been exhibited in Australia.
The collection, sourced from Italy's Museo Nazionale Romano and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze, provides a rare opportunity to experience Roman civilization. The exhibition delves beyond famous emperors to highlight various facets of ancient Roman society, using objects, multimedia projections, and soundscapes.
Visitors can explore themes of ambition, life, luxury, the divine, and eternity. The immersive spaces recreate Roman bathhouses, gladiatorial arenas, and banquets, contrasting the opulence of the ruling classes with the simplicity of everyday citizens through displays of weights, coins, jewellery, and frescoes.
Sculpted portraits of emperors like Augustus and Nero are featured alongside common items like scales and childhood toys. The exhibition also connects modern Italy to Melbourne through events, workshops, film screenings like 'The Godfather', and special dining experiences at the museum's cafe and restaurant.
