A new exhibition in Romania's capital, Bucharest, titled "A.REST 1989," is shedding light on the brutal interrogation methods of the communist-era Securitate. The exhibition, running until mid-September at the National History Museum, utilizes original video recordings of Securitate interrogations from 1989.
These grainy videos showcase coercive questioning and intimidation tactics employed against detainees under Nicolae Ceausescu's rule. The exhibition also features a reconstructed prison cell, complete with a sparse bed and metalware, to evoke the isolation experienced by those detained by the Securitate.
Alongside the video footage, the exhibition displays artifacts that underscore the Securitate's extensive reach. These include a printing press confiscated from a journalist who published an anti-government newspaper and a pair of glasses designed to disorient detainees.
Curators emphasized that the exhibition offers undeniable evidence of the regime's harshness, even in its final moments. They hope "A.REST 1989" will serve as a vital memorial to the victims and educate contemporary audiences, particularly younger generations, about the suppressed freedoms and dignity of that era, aiming to ensure such atrocities are never repeated.
