Romania's Film Industry Rebounds with New Rebates

Romania's film industry is making a strong comeback following the relaunch of its revamped cash rebate program. After a period of financial difficulties and stalled productions, the country has reintroduced incentives, aiming to attract both domestic and international film and TV projects.

The new scheme offers a 30% cash rebate on eligible expenses incurred within Romania. Each project can receive up to €10 million, with an annual budget of €55 million for the program. This overhaul, initiated in 2024, has streamlined the application process, making it faster and more transparent.

Since its official relaunch in July 2024, around 70 film and television projects have either been approved or are in the process of approval, with nine already receiving full payouts. Production budgets have ranged from €1 million to over €20 million, signaling renewed activity.

Industry professionals express optimism about Romania's potential to regain its footing as a filming destination. The efficiency and reliability of the current rebate system are expected to rebuild trust and draw more productions, capitalizing on Romania's competitive production costs and available talent.

This resurgence coincides with international recognition for Romanian cinema, including a recent Palme d'Or win. The industry is united in advocating for continued government support, aiming to build on this momentum and secure further growth for local filmmakers and productions.
