14 Feb
Summary
- Romance book checkouts at Essex libraries rose 25% before Valentine's Day.
- Daily average rose from 63 to 79 novels borrowed in the preceding week.
- Men increasingly enjoy fantasy romance, challenging genre stereotypes.

Libraries across Essex reported a notable 25% surge in romance book borrowings in the days leading up to Valentine's Day.
In 2025, an average of 63 romance novels were borrowed daily from Essex County Council libraries. This figure climbed to 79 per day during the week preceding February 14th.
Data indicates this is an upward trend, with romance book checkouts increasing annually for the past four years ahead of Valentine's Day. Experts note a rise in "steamy romances" since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Contrary to some assumptions, men are increasingly embracing romance novels, particularly fantasy romance titles, challenging genre stereotypes. This growing interest offers a cheap and entertaining escape, providing a guaranteed "happily ever after" that appeals to many. The Romantic Novelists' Association highlights the genre's increasing acceptance and commercial value within the publishing industry, often referred to as its "bread and butter."
