19 Mar
Summary
- A 2,000-year-old Roman well was discovered during shop renovations.
- Georgian-era wall panels and timber work were also found at the site.
- The Caistor and District Trust needs £25,000 to restore the well.

Builders undertaking renovations on a Georgian-era building in Caistor, Lincolnshire, made a significant historical discovery. During courtyard work, they unearthed a Roman well estimated to be 2,000 years old. The well, found beneath a concrete floor, had been modified in later periods, with Georgian brickwork noted.
In addition to the Roman well, the site also yielded wall panels and timber work from the Georgian era. The Caistor and District Trust, involved in the renovation project, has expressed surprise at the find.
The building is being transformed into a heritage hub offering retail, meeting, and holiday accommodation spaces. While the well has been capped off again, the trust hopes to raise the necessary funds for its future restoration. They aim to secure £25,000, supplementing the £4.4 million already allocated for the overall renovations, with work expected to conclude in the summer.
