Disney could reignite the Star Wars franchise's former glory by greenlighting Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron film. After a series of critical and commercial disappointments, a single successful movie is needed to remind audiences of the franchise's potential. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, for example, has not resonated as strongly as anticipated.

Rogue Squadron, initially announced in December 2020 with Patty Jenkins directing, faced development challenges when Jenkins departed to focus on other projects. However, she has since signed a new deal and completed a script for the X-wing-focused film. This project is seen as a potential savior for Star Wars.

The proposed film aims to capture the success of space opera thrillers, akin to the Top Gun franchise, which has seen a resurgence. By centering on exciting starfighter pilots and intense dogfights, Rogue Squadron could appeal to a broad audience, much like the original Star Wars films did with the Death Star attack.

This venture could also recapture the early magic of The Mandalorian by featuring entirely new characters and narratives, separate from the Skywalker saga. By avoiding over-reliance on Jedi and Sith lore, Rogue Squadron can offer fresh adventures, mirroring the initial excitement that drew fans to the series.
