Rodrigo's Charity Fest: $20M Raised Despite Sweltering Heat

The inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, hosted by Olivia Rodrigo in Irvine, California's Great Park, successfully raised $20 million for charities focused on women and girls. The event featured performances by a diverse lineup of artists, all of whom performed without charge. Melinda French Gates later matched the initial $10 million raised, doubling the total.

Despite the philanthropic success, the festival faced considerable challenges due to an unseasonal heatwave with temperatures reaching the mid-90s. Organizers appeared ill-prepared, resulting in long lines for water stations and medical tents, and limited shaded areas. Strict policies on items like sunscreen bottles and umbrellas further exacerbated attendee discomfort.

The festival's programming, however, reflected Rodrigo's vision for a safe space for women and girls, drawing inspiration from past protest movements and feminist festivals like Lilith Fair. The event incorporated elements like Yoko Ono's Wish Tree and messages of activism.

Amidst the heat, attendees demonstrated resilience and mutual support. The day culminated in Rodrigo's headlining set, which featured guest appearances from Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, and Alanis Morissette, paying homage to the legacy of Lilith Fair and continuing the call for change.
