A compelling documentary, "Robert Richardson: The White Devil," has garnered significant attention following its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film chronicles the life and career of the acclaimed cinematographer, Robert Richardson, a three-time Oscar winner and frequent collaborator with renowned directors like Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and Oliver Stone.
Czech cinematographer Jana Hojdová initiated this project by reaching out to the American Society of Cinematographers for her thesis. After persistent efforts, she established a deep connection with Richardson, who was surprised to learn she was a woman. This exchange of personal insights, rather than technical details, formed the core of their interaction.
Hojdová's journey to create the documentary was arduous, beginning in 2017. She famously flew to New Zealand to convince Richardson, who initially demurred, stating his life wasn't interesting enough. Her dedication, capturing footage on her iPhone, eventually led him to agree, though he emphasized it was her film to make.
Securing interviews with Richardson's famous director collaborators proved challenging but rewarding. Oliver Stone readily agreed, while Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino required a more extensive, step-by-step process, including adapting to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions for Scorsese's contribution. Tarantino's interview, conducted in Tel Aviv, lasted three hours, far exceeding Hojdová's initial expectations.
The documentary also features Hojdová's own vulnerability, a difficult but necessary choice that viewers have connected with. Her presence provides a relatable contrast to Richardson's stature. The film's premiere at KVIFF coincided with Hojdová also serving as cinematographer for another film, "Chica Checa," marking a significant personal achievement after years of dedication to both projects.
