Duvall's Quirks: Actor's Odd Demands on Set Revealed

Director Richard Pekinpah shared anecdotes from the filming of "Tender Mercies," highlighting actor Robert Duvall's unique on-set conduct. Duvall, who was already attached to the project, had spent considerable time in Texas adopting the local accent for his role as Mac Sledge.

Pekinpah recounted instances where Duvall questioned the necessity of microphones and external lighting, sometimes requesting their removal. On one occasion, Duvall insisted a microphone be taken away, arguing his character wouldn't have one. Another time, he questioned lighting setups, preferring natural light, despite the practical needs of filmmaking.

Despite these unusual requests, Pekinpah acknowledged Duvall's immense talent. He recalled being deeply impressed by Duvall's performance from the very first scene, a portrayal of a drunk character, which sent chills down his spine. The director recognized Duvall's unparalleled acting ability, noting that whatever Duvall did, it exceeded expectations.
