Robert Duvall, an actor celebrated for his indelible performances across a distinguished career, has died at the age of 95. His death was announced by his wife on Sunday.
Duvall garnered an Academy Award, among seven Oscar nominations, for his portrayal of an alcoholic country singer in the 1983 film "Tender Mercies." He first showcased significant promise early in his career as the reclusive Boo Radley in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962).
His role in "Apocalypse Now" famously included the line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning," delivered in a single take. Duvall considered his performance as Augustus McCrae in the 1989 miniseries "Lonesome Dove" his favorite role.
Born in San Diego on January 5, 1931, Duvall studied drama at Principia College before serving in the Army. He later trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where he roomed with Dustin Hoffman.
Duvall was married four times, most recently to Luciana, who is from Argentina.
