Margot Robbie is defending Emerald Fennell's upcoming film adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" amidst pre-release controversy surrounding its casting choices. Robbie, playing Catherine Earnshaw, addressed the debate over her portrayal differing from the novel's description, noting that Fennell intentionally aged up the character. Jacob Elordi's casting as Heathcliff, a character described as dark-skinned in Emily Brontë's novel, also drew significant online criticism.

Fennell herself explained her artistic decisions, stating that Robbie embodies Catherine's complex and willful nature, requiring a "supersized star power." Elordi was inspired by Fennell's vision after seeing him with sideburns, reminding her of a book cover depiction of Heathcliff. Robbie praised Elordi's performance, comparing him to Daniel Day-Lewis and asserting he is the "Heathcliff" for their generation.

The film's marketing, described as sexy and erotic, has also fueled fan outrage. However, Robbie clarified that while provocative elements exist, the movie is primarily an "epic romance," akin to classics like "The Notebook."
