Roald Dahl Play 'Giant' Hits Cinemas This Fall

A filmed adaptation of the critically acclaimed play "Giant," featuring John Lithgow in the role of author Roald Dahl, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in the fall. This production, captured at London's Harold Pinter Theatre, will commence its run in cinemas on November 19 across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other select international locations.

The play, penned by Mark Rosenblatt and directed by Nicholas Hytner, dramatizes a significant 1983 controversy. Roald Dahl is compelled to confront the consequences of a book review perceived as antisemitic, forcing him to decide between safeguarding his reputation or issuing a public apology. The Broadway staging of "Giant" garnered four Tony Award nominations, notably for Best Play and acting nods for Lithgow and Aya Cash.

John Lithgow expressed his enthusiasm for the global cinema release, highlighting the profound audience response the play has consistently received. He emphasized the play's intelligent and humane narrative, noting how it engages theatergoers in real-time contemplation of its complex questions. Lithgow believes the cinematic distribution will amplify the story's urgency and emotional power.

"Giant" follows a trend of notable Broadway productions, such as "Six" and "Hamilton," being preserved on film and distributed to wider audiences. Producers of "Giant" underscored the unique capacity of live theater to foster shared experiences and challenge perceptions. The playwright, Mark Rosenblatt, conveyed his astonishment and delight at the play's extensive reach, from its initial performances to its upcoming cinema debut.
