Aspiring comedians from across the West Midlands are set to gain a significant platform at the upcoming Rik Mayall Comedy Festival. The event, held in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, celebrates the enduring legacy of the acclaimed comedian Rik Mayall.
This year, on May 29 and 30, BBC Hereford and Worcester will host two dedicated stages. These stages will provide an opportunity for emerging talent from the region to showcase their skills, with performers identified through the BBC Upload initiative.
Nina das Gupta, a host for BBC Hereford and Worcester, expressed excitement about featuring future comedy stars on radio and now live. She emphasized the honor of participating in the festival, recognizing Mayall as a comedy icon and a Worcestershire legend.
The BBC Upload platform allows individuals to submit various content forms, including comedy sketches and poems. Local teams review these submissions, with noteworthy content being broadcast on air or shared digitally. This year's festival also features established comedians, alongside local performers from various West Midlands towns.
The festival stages will be located at the Old Cock Inn on May 29 and in the town centre on May 30. The BBC is still accepting applications for performers interested in appearing on these stages. Organizers anticipate a lively atmosphere, with crowds and potential costume displays reflecting Mayall's work.
Festival chair Chris Broad noted that the event is substantially larger than the previous year. He encouraged aspiring performers to be brave and seize the opportunity to perform, highlighting the supportive nature of the audiences, whether in intimate pub settings or larger outdoor areas.
