Ricky Martin has joined Gael García Bernal's highly anticipated film, 'Hombre al Agua,' taking on roles as both a cast member and executive producer. The comedy-drama, which boasts surreal undertones, is poised for its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. Martin's involvement was revealed just before the film's shoot commenced in Mérida, Mexico.
Bernal, also serving as co-writer and producer, directs 'Hombre al Agua' as his third feature film. He stars as Camilo, a Cuban lifeguard whose life dramatically shifts after saving a prominent Mexican businessman. This encounter leads to a new life in Mexico, including marrying the businessman's daughter, only for Camilo to discover his new reality is not as idyllic as it seems.
The film features a notable Latin American cast alongside Martin, including Esmeralda Pimentel and Manuel García Rulfo. For Martin, this project signifies his first fully Spanish-language on-screen performance in over twenty years, harkening back to his early acting career in the 1990s. He expressed his honor in collaborating with Bernal, praising his talent and the overall project.
Inspired by Bernal's own experiences with fatherhood, 'Hombre al Agua' delves into themes of changing relationships, loneliness, masculinity, class, immigration, and belonging. The film is scheduled for release in Mexican cinemas on September 24 and is among the titles contending to represent Mexico at the 99th Academy Awards.
