Musician Rick Wakeman CBE delivered what he called the "most extraordinary concert" of his life on September 24th, performing for more than 150 rescued bears at Vietnam's Tam Dao National Park. Wakeman, known for his work with David Bowie and the band Yes, played two new piano pieces, "Dawn Reborn" and "Moon," composed to honor bears rescued from bile farms.
The audience of bears, including moon bears named Georges, Hector, and Xin Xin, seemed captivated by the music. Some ventured close to the grand piano as Wakeman played in the open-air sanctuary. He noted how the bears reacted to different musical elements, suggesting music affects them too.
Wakeman expressed his hope that the concert would raise awareness for the plight of bears still trapped on bile farms, with an estimated four dying monthly. He urged public support for initiatives to free the remaining bears, highlighting their vulnerability and the need for conservation efforts.
Animals Asia, the charity hosting the event, described the day as magical. Their CEO, Dr. Jill Robinson MBE, noted the significance of dedicating a piece to a bear named Dawn, whose recovery was aided by calm music. The event also featured fellow ambassadors Peter Egan and Lesley Nicol, supporting the cause to end bear bile farming in Vietnam.
