Rick Moranis Returns to Hollywood in Spaceballs Sequel

Rick Moranis, celebrated for his role in "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," has officially returned to acting. The 73-year-old actor made his comeback announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for "Spaceballs: The New One," the comedy sequel he is starring in. This marks his first film appearance in over two decades, ending a long period away from the spotlight.

Moranis will once again portray Dark Helmet, a role he originated in the 1987 film. He shared that discussions for a "Spaceballs" sequel with Mel Brooks began as early as 1989. The return of Bill Pullman as Lone Starr and the addition of his son, Lewis Pullman, alongside original stars Daphne Zuniga and Mel Brooks, motivated Moranis to commit to the project. Keke Palmer and Josh Gad are also joining the cast.

The new film aims to be a nostalgic look back at popular culture, with a particular focus on parodying the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy. Josh Gad, who also co-wrote the film, elaborated that the movie will explore the theme of nostalgia. Early footage revealed spoofs of "Avatar" and iconic "Star Wars" moments, including a scene referencing Palpatine's return and a "Frozen Yogurt" gag.

"Spaceballs: The New One" is scheduled for release on April 23, 2027. The panel also teased a potential cinematic universe of "Spaceballs" sequels, humorously mirroring Marvel's expansive franchise announcements. Gad also addressed rumors about his role, clarifying he is not playing Barf, but a character from the same species as a tribute to the late John Candy.
