A journalist, Ben, has publicly detailed his estranged relationship with his Oscar-winning actor father, Richard. The rift reportedly began when Ben, managing his father's social media in 2017, posted in support of his brother Harry, who had accused Kevin Spacey of sexual assault.

This tweet allegedly prompted a #MeToo accusation against Richard, whom Ben claims blamed his children for the ensuing acrimony. The situation further deteriorated after a 2022 family dinner in San Francisco, where an argument over public accusations of nepotism and blame led to Ben using a homophobic slur against his father. Ben stated he has been attempting to reconcile since.

Richard’s alleged response was an email stating he believed Ben thought he was withholding money and criticized Ben and his sister Emily for causing a public scene. Ben shared this as possibly his last communication from his father, expressing regret over the deletions of his initial posts but felt compelled to share the details after years of silence.
