Survivor's First Winner: A Legal Battle 26 Years Later

Richard Hatch, the first Sole Survivor crowned on August 23, 2000, and winner of the initial $1 million prize, has faced significant legal entanglements regarding his winnings. His innovative gameplay established a strategic foundation for the show, though it also led to him being labeled an early reality TV villain. In October 2024, Hatch reflected on this, stating viewers didn't understand his strategic approach.

Hatch's post-Survivor journey included a controversial appearance on Survivor: All-Stars in 2004, and later, a prison sentence beginning in 2006 for failing to report his prize money and other income. As of May 13, 2024, a judge ruled he owes $3,293,471.56 in taxes, plus additions, a decision he is currently appealing. Hatch expressed confidence in a just outcome from the appellate court.
