Summary
- Richard Gere nearly abandoned Primal Fear due to casting struggles.
- Ed Norton's exceptional audition secured his breakout role.
- Norton would sneak onto the set of 'The Birdcage' during filming.

Richard Gere recently shared that the crime thriller Primal Fear faced significant casting challenges, almost halting production. The role of Aaron Stampler, the young altar boy accused of murder, proved difficult to fill. While numerous aspiring actors could portray the character's erratic behavior, they struggled to convincingly exhibit normalcy, a crucial element for the part.
Gere admitted he was prepared to withdraw from the project due to these casting hurdles. However, a last-minute open call introduced Ed Norton, whose audition impressed Gere and the casting team. Norton, then in his mid-twenties, delivered a performance so compelling that it solidified his casting, marking his film debut.
Norton's performance in Primal Fear garnered critical acclaim, earning him a Golden Globe and nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars and BAFTAs. Interestingly, during the filming of the 1996 movie, Norton confessed to sneaking onto the set of Mike Nichols' concurrent film, The Birdcage, which was being shot nearby, to observe Nichols directing.
