The 1993 film "Rex: A Dinosaur's Story" is finally coming to the United States for its first-ever theatrical release this December. Directed by Haruki Kadokawa and featuring animatronics by the renowned Carlo Rambaldi, the creator of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial's" iconic look, the movie will have a limited run starting in New York City. Kadokawa, a prominent director at the time, was later convicted for drug smuggling, which affected the film's initial distribution.
"Rex" was a significant release in Japan, where it earned 2.2 billion yen and ranked as the seventh-highest-grossing film of 1993. However, its production cost of 2 billion yen meant it was not a financial success in theaters. The film's North American premiere follows a recent screening of a new remaster at New York's Japan Society in July 2026.
