18 Mar
Summary
- Animation features a star-studded voice cast but centers on unlikable child protagonists.
- The magical world depicted feels generic, resembling a screensaver.
- Tim Rice's lyrics and Ewan McGregor's dialogue are considered thin and disappointing.
This animated film features a notable voice cast, including Ewan McGregor and Helena Bonham Carter, but struggles due to its unlikable young protagonists. The story follows twins Elise and Alfie who wish themselves into a magical realm, encountering various challenges. Unfortunately, Elise is portrayed as deeply annoying, and Alfie as nondescript, making their adventures a chore to watch.
The creative contributions also appear to underdeliver. Tim Rice's lyrics are described as uninspired, and Ewan McGregor, as the Wish Collector, delivers dialogue that feels hollow. The film adopts a generic storyworld often seen in contemporary children's animation, where visuals resemble screensavers and dialogue mixes pseudo-Roald Dahl elements with forced inspirational messages.
