11 Oct
Summary
- "Passion of the Christ" sequel to be released in two parts
- New actor cast as Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel
- Filming to take place in Rome

According to a recent report, Mel Gibson's follow-up to his 2004 blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ" is moving forward with Lionsgate as the distributor. The new film, titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," will be released in two parts, with the first set to premiere on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and the second part following 40 days later on Ascension Day, Thursday, May 6, 2027.
However, the sequel will feature an all-new cast, as Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the original film, will not be returning. The filmmakers are currently meeting with actors in Rome to cast the lead role. A source told The New York Post that they are "meeting with actors [in Rome]" to find the right actor to portray the resurrected Christ.
"The Passion of the Christ" was a massive success, grossing over $610 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically until last year. The upcoming two-part sequel is expected to generate similar levels of interest and box office success.
