Restored Angel Sketches: A Coventry Christmas Treasure

Striking chalk sketches, originally created by artist John Hutton as blueprints for Coventry Cathedral's West Screen, have undergone meticulous restoration. These detailed drawings formed the basis for the 66 angel and saint figures that Hutton painstakingly carved into the cathedral's glass screen over a ten-year period.

The Friends of Coventry Cathedral group acquired the three large sketches in 2022. Following their professional restoration in Gloucestershire, these significant artistic works are now ready to be showcased. The cathedral plans to exhibit the restored tryptic during the upcoming Christmas season, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the creation of a beloved landmark.

This initiative ensures that Hutton's foundational artwork for one of the cathedral's most prominent features is preserved and shared. The display over the festive period provides a timely opportunity for the public to appreciate the intricate process behind the awe-inspiring 70ft-high West Screen.
