Filmmaker Zach Cregger has disclosed that the heartbreaking conclusion to his horror film "Resident Evil" underwent significant reshoots after principal photography concluded. The original ending, Cregger felt, failed to keep the audience emotionally invested in the protagonist, Bryan.
Bryan, who is infected and transforming into a monster, was intended to deliver a cure. However, Cregger's initial cut obscured his monstrous features and depicted the antidote's destruction too early, reducing the climax to mere violence.
To rectify this, Cregger utilized advanced 3D scanning technology at Scanline, a Los Angeles studio. This allowed him to capture Austin Abrams's performance in a hairnet, which was then transformed into the monstrous entity in post-production, ensuring the audience saw enough of their hero.
Furthermore, Cregger revealed he shot a contingency scene in Prague as a backup. This footage proved vital in re-crafting the ending, preserving the tension and hope until the final frame, a stark contrast to the original plan where the antidote was immediately destroyed.
