Renowned Vocalist Mahesh Kale Aims to Revive and Celebrate Indian Classical Arts

Mahesh Kale, one of the most prominent faces of Indian classical music today, was in Vadodara last month for a performance. The acclaimed vocalist, who won the National Film Award for his song "Aruni Kirani" from the 2016 Marathi film "Katyar Kaljat Ghusali", is on a mission to demystify the notion that classical music is only for the elite.

Kale, who has been praised for bridging the gap between classical and non-classical audiences, says his aim is to further the legacy of Indian classical arts and make them more accessible to the masses. During his recent visit, he toured the campus of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Vadodara and expressed his admiration for the institution's dedication to Indian classical music.

The vocalist was also fortunate to have the legendary Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki as his guru, whom he credits for inspiring his musical journey. Kale says Abhisheki made immense contributions to every aspect of Indian classical music and almost single-handedly revived the Sangeet Natak tradition in Maharashtra.

Through his non-profit organization, Indian Classical Music and Arts (ICMA) Foundation, Kale is working to nurture and celebrate Indian classical music, helping talented artists who may not have the necessary resources. He believes that the local and traditional forms of music, such as abhangs, can resonate globally, as emotions are universal.
