Renowned TV Writer Nigel McCrery Leaves Modest £10,000 Estate

In a surprising revelation, it has been disclosed that Nigel McCrery, the renowned creator of the hit TV crime drama Silent Witness, left behind a modest estate of only £10,000 when he passed away in February 2025 at the age of 71. McCrery, who was also the co-creator of the popular BBC series New Tricks, had been diagnosed with a terminal illness in October 2024.
Prior to his television career, McCrery served as a police officer with the murder squad in Nottingham. He then joined the BBC in 1990 on a graduate entry scheme, using his policing background to create the drama Backup, which ran from 1995 to 1997. McCrery went on to create the long-running forensic investigation series Silent Witness in 1996, which has become one of the BBC's most enduring dramas and is set to air its 29th season in early 2026.
In addition to his television work, McCrery also wrote several novels and non-fiction books. At the time of his death, a spokesperson for his agency praised his "incredible career" and the lasting impact of his creative contributions to the arts.
