On October 14th, 2025, Neelanjana Ghose, a renowned costume designer and the wife of acclaimed filmmaker Goutam Ghose, passed away unexpectedly in Kolkata at the age of 70. Neelanjana was a respected figure in the Indian film industry, having worked as a costume designer on 20 feature films, including all of Goutam Ghose's internationally recognized works.
Beyond her contributions to cinema, Neelanjana was deeply dedicated to the kantha craft, a traditional art form she began working with in the early 1980s. Her passion for this traditional textile technique was an integral part of her creative legacy. Neelanjana is survived by her husband, Goutam Ghose, as well as their son Ishaan and daughter Anandi.
According to Anandi, Neelanjana was otherwise in good health, but suffered a sudden and rare aortic rupture that led to her untimely passing. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep sorrow at the loss, acknowledging Neelanjana's significant social work and the beauty of her kantha art. The chief minister urged Goutam Ghose to continue his filmmaking work, keeping his late wife's spirit and contributions in mind.
