Renowned Author Margaret Atwood Honored for Bravery in Literature

On October 11, 2025, renowned author Margaret Atwood was honored with the Eleanor Roosevelt Bravery in Literature Lifetime Achievement Award. Atwood, who is 85 years old, accepted the prestigious award at the Literary Awards ceremony held at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, New York.

In her acceptance speech, Atwood acknowledged the significance of the award, stating that for her generation, Eleanor Roosevelt was a "towering figure." The acclaimed author, who is also one of the most-banned authors in the United States, went on to condemn book banning as a "power grab" by certain groups who want to "demonstrate their dominance by squashing other people underfoot."

Atwood also touched on the challenges she has faced as a writer, including online attacks, death threats, and even unwanted advances from men. However, she noted that the worst consequence she has faced in North America is having her books banned from schools and libraries. Despite these obstacles, Atwood remains steadfast in her commitment to her craft, and is set to release her upcoming memoir, "Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts," on November 4, 2025.
