Family Affair: Miss Texas Crowned Miss America

Regan Hutsell, a former Radio City Rockette, achieved a childhood ambition on September 6 by winning the Miss America crown. This victory marks the first for a Miss Texas in 51 years and makes Hutsell the first woman of color to win while showcasing her natural hair.

Hutsell's pageant preparation was significantly influenced by her family. Her father, inspired by a previous Miss America's study methods, created a binder of current events questions for her to practice daily. This familial support extended to her sister, a former New York City Ballet dancer, who coached Hutsell's talent performance.

Having previously danced with the Radio City Rockettes and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Hutsell, 25, decided to pursue pageantry after taking a break to focus on family and community. She earned nearly $90,000 in scholarships and plans to become a physical therapist after her yearlong reign.

This pageant was Hutsell's third attempt, culminating a lifelong aspiration. She recalls childhood memories of seeing pageant photos and dreaming of participating. Her win represents a significant personal achievement and a moment of pride for her entire family.
