Rebel Wilson's directorial debut, the musical comedy "The Deb," has secured U.S. distribution with Sunrise Films, following its Australian theatrical release. The film, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, tells the story of Taylah Simpkins, a high school outcast determined to redefine herself at the upcoming Debutante Ball. Her plans are complicated when her city cousin, Maeve, attempts to disrupt the event.
The acquisition, announced by Protagonist Pictures, follows the film's theatrical run in Australia and its premiere at TIFF. "The Deb" features original songs by Meg Washington and choreography by Rob Ashford. This news comes amid ongoing legal disputes. Last week, a court in Australia heard closing arguments in a defamation trial brought by lead actress Charlotte MacInnes against Wilson, concerning allegations of sexual harassment.
Wilson is also involved in a separate defamation lawsuit filed in 2024 by producers Gregor Cameron and Amanda Ghost, along with executive producer Vince Holden. Wilson has denied these claims. "The Deb" is a co-production involving AI Film, Unigram, Bunya Prods., and Camp Sugar, filmed in New South Wales, Australia, with support from Screen NSW.
