Reading Festival Axes Iconic New Artist Stage

Reading Festival has announced the removal of its BBC Introducing stage, a move that has sparked concern among emerging artists. This stage, which has been a launchpad for musicians like Ed Sheeran and Florence + The Machine since 2008, will be replaced by the new Canopy stage. Organisers stated the change aims to accommodate a broader spectrum of new talent.

The decision means the festival will no longer feature artists selected by the BBC for that specific stage. Instead, the Canopy stage will be open to a wider pool of emerging artists, with organisers expressing a goal to support more diverse up-and-coming acts. This development comes as the BBC Introducing stage had supported approximately 70% of the UK artists featured in the current festival lineup.

Artists like Tommy Longhurst of Only the Poets expressed disappointment, calling the move "sad news" for those starting in the music industry. He highlighted the stage's significance in providing opportunities for new musicians. The BBC confirmed that other festivals will continue to host BBC Introducing stages this summer, and they are exploring future collaborations with Reading Festival.
